Waiver Wire Wonders: Week 1

Text Size A A A
Weeding through those unwieldy waiver wires requires a keen eye and a quick trigger. Thus, Waiver Wire Wonders provides a weekly snapshot of players worthy of consideration who should be available on a good portion of league waiver wires. Enjoy those pickups...

Antwaan Randle El (Redskins, WR) – While the Redskins passing game is always suspect with Jason Campbell at the helm (I'm keeping one eye open on Colt Brennan), Randle El caught seven passes for 73 yards. He's worth snagging in deep leagues, but don't waste a roster spot just yet in 8 or 10 team leagues.

Anthony Fasano (Dolphins, TE) – Fasano came out of nowhere to record a touchdown and 84 yards on eight catches. More importantly, he looks like a Pennington favorite on a team with few other good options. Go ahead and pull the trigger on Fasano.

DeSean Jackson (Eagles, WR) – While I doubt he is around in leagues with any decent competition, DeSean looks like the real deal. He hauled in six catches for 106 yards. Grab him ASAP if you can.

Dante Rosario (Panthers, TE) – Besides having arguably the best porn name in the league, Rosario caught seven passes for 96 yards and a teeder. If Delhomme keeps looking his way, Rosario should have a big season.

Chris Johnson (Titans, RB) – 26,000 fantasy players can't be wrong. That's how many people have added Johnson just midway through the second set of Sunday games. Johnson racked up 93 yards on the ground coupled with three catches and a touchdown through the air. Johnson is worth adding immediately if it's not too late. He put up some of the top numbers of anyone on Sunday.

Matt Cassel (Patriots, QB) – The infallible Tom Brady hath fallen with a season-ending knee injury. While Cassel is not exactly a household name, the Pats offensive line and wide receiver crew make anyone in this spot an automatic add. Cassel is worth the gamble.

Le'Ron McClain (Ravens, RB) – Raise your hand if you have ever heard of Le'Ron. Anyone? Nobody? Well, McClain racked up 86 yards on 19 carries and caught two passes for the Ravens. The 86 yards is nice, but the 19 carries is the real surprise. Obviously, McGahee's health is the key variable here, but with Flacco throwing for a whopping 129 yards, anybody involved significantly in the Ravens ground game is worth a look.

Sammy Morris (Patriots, RB) – While Sammy Morris is part of a committee and Tom Brady is done for the season, Morris still looks like a good pickup. He ran for 53 yards and a score on ten carries, and caught five passes for another 34 yards. With Cassel taking over, expect this short passing game to play a big role in the offense.

Bo Scaife (Titan, TE) – Strange things are afoot in Nashville. First, Vince Young looks to be out indefinitely with a sprained knee, but also the hype about Alge Crumpler seems like just hype, while Bo Scaife appears to be the real beneficiary of the offensive gameplan at tight end.

Steve Sanders (Browns, WR) – What this Cleveland wide receiver lacks in regular playing time, he more than makes up for with a sweet Corvette. Just kidding, forgive the 90210 joke.

Eddie Royal (Broncos, WR) - Looks like we saved the best for last. The Broncos' second-round rookie wide receiver dropped a mammoth game late Monday night. Royal caught nine passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos' rout of division rival Oakland. The big question surrounding Royal is how will his production fare with the Week 2 return of Brandon Marshall, Cutler's numero uno? But Royal clearly ouplayed everyone else on the field, including Darrell Jackson, so he is a definite add.
