We must be closing in on the weekend. Why? Because I can't seem to focus on anything other than Fantasy Football. And that's certainly not a bad thing. It also means, it's time to roll out another installment of sink or swim. Yup, it's the weekly bit where I toss out some negative thoughts at a trio of underachievers. Ultimately, we (as in the royal we) make a rash decision if it's time to dump these guys or give 'em a little more time. Unfortunately, time is running out on this Fantasy season. Therefore, you've gotta load up only on players with "up-side" or guys that can and will help win that coveted Fantasy title. On today's list we've got the disappointing QB-WR duo of Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes, as well as a distant one-time Fantasy darling Trent Edwards. I know your time is valuable, as is mine...so let's tap right into this thing. It's time to sink 'em...shall we?
Ben Roethlisberger: How do I say this nicely? Um, Big Ben ain't done (beep) lately for his Fantasy owners. OK, he's actually done a lot to completely sabotage their chances each week. In his past three games he's been sacked 10 times and thrown 8 INT's with only 2 total TD's (one rushing and one passing). Yeah, I'd say we can all agree that's hardly getting it done. Why are you still starting this guy?
Sure, I know he's been injured and he didn't even get a chance to complete the Washington game. To that I say big deal. There are plenty of better options out there in terms of Fantasy relevance. The funny thing is that I'm sure I'll hear it from Steelers fans about how GREAT Big Ben is and how he's a winner. Maybe so, but he's not a winner in Fantasy Football. Every single season I see Big Ben's name amongst the pre-season ranks as an Upper Tier QB. Yet, every year I shrug it off, because the fact is he never has really delivered a consistent ENTIRE season of great Fantasy stats.
Yup, he's has his spurts or hot streaks, but so has Kerry Collins. Do you trust either to lead you home in the Fantasy playoffs? The simple answer is no and no. Check it, Big Ben closes the Fantasy Playoffs at Baltimore and then at Tennessee. Have fun with that if Big Ben's your guy. I say sink and move on.
Santonio Holmes: See Big Ben. Or better yet, see what the big bust Santonio Holmes has become in Fantasy circles. All the hype went up in blaze of dank weed smoke (yes, lame attempt at a joke). Either way, Holmes is simply not producing on par with what you'd hope for from a potential #1 WR. He's not been able to jockey that honor away from his good buddy Hines Ward. Coincidentally enough, Ward just continues to produce decent numbers while Holmes is flirting more with a Reggie Brown caliber season.
I'm sorry, but 29 catches, 400 some odd yards and a couple TD's ain't wetting my appetite. Then again, there is just way, way too much upside to abandon ship now. You've gotta stash (another bad joke) this guy for a rainy day and hope he gets hot. Of course, a lot of that depends on his QB stepping up. Anyhow, the verdict today is stick.
Trent Edwards: The love fest is over. Trent Edwards looked sharp oh about 5 weeks ago. He's you're guy if want a shade under 200 yards and at most 1 TD per week. This one is probably the most obvious choice on the board. Yes, you should NOT still be flirting with Trent Edwards in your line-up on Sunday afternoon's. The weather is cooling down in Buffalo and the schedule is amping up. This can mean only one thing, ditch Edwards and send him to the waiver wire. He'll do you no good.
