The last turn through the Yankees rotation went like this: Mike Mussina, Dan Giese, Andy Pettitte, Darrell Rasner, and Joba Chamberlain.

Ok, so Mussina and Pettitte: check. Joba? Wasn't he supposed to be setting up? Instead Yanks fans get treated to a rousing rendition of Kyle Farnsworth in the 8th ... woo hoo! Rasner was an uninspiring injury replacement last year, and who the heck is Dan Giese? Sidney Ponson is next to the party. You remember him, right? He's the fat dude pictured here who got kicked off the Rangers for being a royal pain in the arse and enjoys driving after a few pops.

Injuries got them here.

The major issue is Chien Ming-Wang's foot injury -- because the NL hasn't grown up.

Ian Kennedy is on his way back from injury and threw impressively -- seven K in three shutout innings -- in a rehab start last Monday.

Finally, Carl Pavano is apparently closer to a MLB return than Phil Hughes.

Whaddaya say we fantasy spin it up for each dude after the jump ...

Here's what we can expect from here on out:

Mike Mussina -- Apparently he listened to Hank, because he's made the necessary adjustments to succeed as an old dude. He's actually on pace for 20 wins. Expect more like 17, but he should remain along this same path -- low strikeouts, high hits, and wins.

Andy Pettitte -- For a guy that's only 36 and has always been a finesse pitcher, you wouldn't expect him to slow down too considerably. He's been a tad bit consistent, and you can expect a similar final line to last season (15-9, 4.05, 141 K).

Joba Chamberlain -- He's finding his groove, and last Wednesday he collected his first career victory as a starting pitcher. Expect a lot more, starting with eight more this season. In his last three starts, he rocks a 0.98 ERA in 18 1/3 innings. As the season progresses he'll be able to work later in the game, and he's punched out 16 guys in the last two games. By August he's a strikeout-per-inning guy with shutout stuff nearly every start. Plus, he won't break down because he became a starter well into the season. He should never be benched from here on out.

Darrell Rasner -- Since a dazzling start (3-0, 1.89, 11/2 K/BB), he's fallen apart. In his last five starts, Razzy (doesn't work? ok, sorry) is 1-4 with a 7.00 ERA. He figures to be the one left out when the fat man joins, which means he's dead to you.

Dan Giese -- He handcuffed the Reds in his first career MLB start, and overall sports a 3.50 ERA. The thing is, he's 31 and just now made it to the bigs. He's always been good, but never great, in the minors. He does, however, strike out nearly a batter per inning. On the flip side, if Ponson sticks, Giese is only in the rotation until Kennedy returns. Use him only in deep AL-only leagues or as a short-term fix.

Sidney Ponson -- It's tough to trust him, but as of right now he actually looks like a good fantasy option moving forward. The Yanks will keep his personality in check, his run support should remain nice, his ballpark is now more pitcher friendly, and he was throwing the ball really well for Texas.

Ian Kennedy -- I mentioned Kennedy's rehab start earlier, which is a great sign. The 23-year-old was awful earlier in the season, but things are different in the Bronx now. His career minor league numbers are 14-3 with a 1.79 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and a 180/52 K/BB in 160 innings. He's ready this time, and is a big-time second half sleeper. Stash him immediately.

Carl Pavano -- I don't care if he comes back before Hughes. There are enough other options. Don't waste your time.

Phil Hughes -- Sounds like the Yanks are thinking late-August. If Kennedy and Ponson work out behind the top three on this list there won't be any reason to rush the young stud. He's a stashee in large leagues, but can be ignored for a while in shallower ones.

Chien Ming-Wang -- He's gotta be stashed. If he's sitting on your waiver wire, get him now. He'll be back in September to join a hotly contested pennant race. One in which I predict the Yanks outduel the Rays for the AL Wild Card.
The Large, Old, Injured, Ill-Tempered, and Unknown: State of the Yankee Rotation originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST . This is nothing short of miraculous. After all the setbacks Mark Mulder has experienced, he might start this weekend in Kansas City for the Cardinals. As reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Tonight's outing is considered a tuneup more than a full-blown start, suggesting the Cardinals have made a decision but will wait to see how Mulder exits the appearance before confirming his return to the major leagues.

"It depends on how it goes. We're not really putting a day on it," general manager John Mozeliak said.

Asked when Mulder would start, Mozeliak said, "We'll know that by Tuesday."
So he's going tonight for Triple-A Memphis, and unless his arm falls off he could be inserted into the rotation? After everything that we've been reading up to this point, it's an absolutely stunning revelation. I'm still skeptical that he's physically okay. I mean, just a month ago we thought he'd never pitch again because they had no idea what was wrong with the shoulder. Now he's ready to pitch in the bigs? C'mon.

Fantasy Spin: Don't bother. There's no way he'll hold up over the course of the season. Even if he somehow does, he's been completely ineffective in triple-A, compiling a 13.50 ERA in 13 1/3 innings of work. He's only punched out eight, while he's allowed 28 hits en route to a horrifying 2.48 WHIP. If that's what the minor leaguers were doing the major leaguers (yes, even the Royals) will tattoo him.
Mark Mulder to Start Saturday? originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 14:28:00 EST . To say that he struggled -- batting .167 with 0HR, seven walks and 20 strikeouts in 48 at bats -- would be an understatement. But as soon as he got demoted to the minors, he started ripping the cover off the ball. Again.

Hence, the Mariners have decided to call Clement back to the bigs. He hasn't played in the majors since returning yet, but he should strap back on the padding and/or take a trip to the outfield soon.

He has been playing at AAA-Tacoma though, absolutely raking the ball -- nine homers, another nine doubles, getting on base at a .375+ club and only 17 strikeouts in May and June combined -- since returning. Which would explain why the M's didn't mind bringing him back up (well, that and their MLB worst record).

Now, Clement is going to be catcher eligible for fantasy purposes, but he might not always play there, giving him the potential to be a half-season/poor man's Josh Willingham from 2006.

Is he a must add in every fantasy league? Um, no. Smaller leagues don't want to burn waiver claims or take the risk that he will do what he did last time. But if you have a 12 team league (or bigger) or use two catchers, I think I'm grabbing him for the upside. Right now, the internet related buzz says to hold off on grabbing him, but if you don't beat the buzz, you end up continuing to play Jesus Flores.

The downside is there (see his first promotion) but the power from that spot, especially if you're in a keeper league, is too strong to ignore.
Jeff Clement to the Bigs ... Headley got the call this weekend and will start his first game Tuesday when the Fathers face the Bronx Bombers in Yankee Stadium. So, you know, no pressure.

'He's on his way,' [GM Kevin] Towers said before Saturday's Interleague game against the Indians.

[...]"I think the environment is much better than it was three weeks ago," Towers said. "We have got a lot of guys contributing offensively. When he gets here, he shouldn't have to feel like he's got to carry this ballclub. We're playing good baseball now.

"To me, now is kind of the right time to have him here, when things are going well."

And by "going well", what Towers means is "after his June 1 arbitration date; well enough after, in fact, to make sure everyone forget that's why I kept him down in the first place."

Although, in fairness, the Padres have won seven of their last ten while leapfrogging the Giants and Rockies and somehow climbing within 6.5 games. Additionally, Jake Peavy is back, so maybe things aren't as bleak as they were earlier. Convenient, really.

Fantasy Spin: Headley is going to be OF eligible and likely 3B eligible as he'll spell Kevin Kouzmanoff. He's an impact player, who I would grab in most leagues (if you need 3B help), especially keepers. Of course, he is also a rookie and an OF, so be patient and don't expect him to pull a Ryan Braun or anything.

Chase Headley, Uh, Heads to the Majors originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Sun, 15 Jun 2008 21:45:00 EST . There's a reason for that, which is ... when healthy, he's a stud. Well, that "when healthy" part is an issue this year, and it just became a little more unlikely.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Carp's comeback hit a snag this week. He even went in to have an MRI on his "repaired" elbow ligament yesterday. Why?

Carpenter returned to St. Louis to be seen by team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta after becoming increasingly concerned about what he was feeling following a Wednesday side session at the club's minor-league complex in Jupiter, Fla.
Oh boy. Also contained in the piece were that the Cards' GM is "concerned," and an admission that Carpenter won't be pitching "around the All-Star break" like they had hoped.

Look, we all knew he wasn't coming back that quickly, but the team was pushing for that date. Now they aren't, and they haven't even set an amended timetable. That sounds bad. It sounds like they are scared. Once the results of yesterday's MRI are made public we'll know much more, but this doesn't look good.

In light of this most recent news, I predict you won't see the '05 Cy Young winner on the hill this season.

Fantasy Spin: If you have already taken the initiative to stash him on your bench, keep him there until there is definitive bad news (unfortunately, my prediction doesn't qualify). You don't want to drop him and then watch someone else reap the September awards because of what turned out to be a minor setback.
Bad News for Chris Carpenter originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 10:00:00 EST . Take, for instance, last season when a given owner tried to add Ryan Braun or Tim Lincecum prior to their call-up, only to find them sitting on your bench. There's no doubt that you felt pretty superior when they undoubtedly posted something like, "I can't believe he's already taken!" (Of course, this assumes a free agent world - otherwise, the same reaction would occur after you bid on that player weeks before anyone else did.)

On the other hand, this can go a bit too far sometimes. This year, I drafted Cameron Maybin, sure that I had myself a great combination of young speed and power - and then he got sent down by the Marlins, and it's far from clear when he'll be back in the bigs. I've stashed Colby Rasmus on a team where I have a bench that justifies it, even though it's not clear if he'll play before September.

Of course, this doesn't just apply to fresh young faces -- the savvy fantasy player can also pick up and stash a veteran who is out on the DL for a sizeable part of the year. Many folks have been holding on to Francisco Liriano for just this reason. (I'm of the theory that this is a waste since he'll be able to contribute very little when he does return.) But who else is likely out there on your free agent wire, potentially providing some free benefits to you down the stretch? Well, it turns out the Cardinals have a rash of pitchers with some prior success that should be hurling in the bigs sooner than later. Let's look at them and decide whether they are worth your bench space.

Mark Mulder: Look, I'm only talking about Mulder at all because some people just don't learn. Look at his ERA's in his last two seasons - 7.16 and 12.27. Those aren't misprints, but they are horror shows. Sure, Mulder is the guy who won between 15 and 21 games every season between 2001 and 2005, but those days are simply long gone. There's no reason to much farther into it, because Mulder's upside ends somewhere around your ankles.

Chris Carpenter: On the other hand, 'Carp' has oodles of promise, enough that he's notched himself a Cy Young, which we hear is usually given out to pretty good pitchers. (By the way, if you want a trip back down Memory Lane, the pitcher he nudged out for that award? Dontrelle Willis.) However, he's on the way back from Tommy John surgery. He's been throwing pretty well according to Cardinals brass, and is currently slated to return in late July. Is he worth putting on your bench now for the last two months of the year? It says here that the answer is...yes. With extreme caution. The Cardinals are somehow managing to win games, and Carpenter should be able to put up decent stats in the limited innings he's likely to post. He's not going to anchor your team, but there's a chance he could be a good SP3 or SP4 for you before the end of the year on the cheap.

Matt Clement: And then there's Matt Clement. Somewhere along the way, I developed a soft spot for Clement, mainly because of the 215 strikeouts he notched for the Cubs back in 2002. But stare at his stats a little bit longer and it's hard to be too optimistic that he'll help your fantasy team whatsoever. Heck, it's a bit of a leap to determine whether or not he'll help the Cardinals. He should be back fairly quickly and - and take this more as a warning sign than something positive - he's available in 100% of leagues. He's recovering from right shoulder surgery (yeah, that's his throwing arm), and there's not a like to be optimistic here.

The Stash Box: Cardinals Pitchers You Might Be Thinking About originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 00:50:00 EST . ESPN just reported that he has a mildly displaced fracture of the fourth metacarpal. Translation: broken hand. He's reportedly out six weeks.

This is a blow to the Cubs, but hardly devastating. He's a stud and has been hitting as well as anyone in the everyday lineup, but the team is loaded with capable hitters and he's a defensive liability. They dealt without him for two weeks earlier in the season and played quite well, going 9-5.

For the Cubs, several guys will benefit playing-time wise. The options are plentiful thanks for the versatility of the bench and Mark DeRosa. Mike Fontenot or Ronny Cedeno can play second base while DeRosa shifts to LF. Micah Hoffpauir -- sure to get the call from triple-A -- will get some looks in LF as well. Finally, should Lou Pinella decide to stray from his CF platoon, Reed Johnson can play left while Jim Edmonds stays in center. There won't be an everyday lineup. Musical chairs is more like it.

Fantasy Spin: Soriano can't be replaced by anyone on the waiver wire, but you have to stash him on your bench and try to make do as best you can. None of the Cubs spare parts listed above that would be free agents (should be everyone but DeRosa) are worth owning because they won't play full time.

Take a look at Luke Scott, Lastings Milledge, or Adam Jones; for example. Just like I said earlier today with Pujols, this has to suck if you own him.

I do recommend shopping him, especially if there is a Cubs homer in your league. The team is playing so well now our fans are likely to have delusions of grandeur in any deal involving one of "our own." You can probably be a bit felonious here.

Specific lineup/trade questions? Hit us up.
Alfonso Soriano Could Miss Up to Six Weeks originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 23:00:00 EST . Putz left the mound with an ailing pitching elbow today in Toronto, and young fireballer Brandon Morrow took over to garner his first career save.

Putz already had some injury woes earlier this season, and if this is indeed an injury to his pitching elbow he may be lost for the season. It's not like the Mariners are going to literally give up on the 2008 season, but if they have to make a decision on whether they want him healthy for the start of next season or not, no chances will be taken with his long term health.

As for Morrow, I have mentioned a Joba-like rotation move for him, but this could change everything. He's got sick stuff and would easily become a dominant closer. Coming into today, Morrow sported a 1.06 ERA with 23 whiffs in 17 innings.

The only downside is that the Mariners do, in fact, suck. His save opportunities would be few and far between. Still, that doesn't mean he wouldn't be a valuable contributor to the category ... Brian Wilson has 18 saves for the hapless Giants. Unlike Wilson, Morrow will provide stellar help in ERA and WHIP when he's on the hill.

Keep an eye on Putz in shallow leagues because you don't want to jump the gun for a middle reliever.

In deeper leagues where Morrow is still available, go get him now and beat the crowd.
Need Saves? You've got C.C., Bedard, and Verlander collectively sucking. On the other hand, Saunders is tied for the AL lead in wins and Wellemeyer is 7-1. Etc. Etc. Etc.

This is weird, but it's my job to help you sort it out and plan for the rest of the '08 campaign. Let's start with the dude at the right who is throwing a ball at you.

Joe Saunders -- He's 9-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Those numbers alone say "elite starter." He also plays for the team that wins games, so he should keep piling up wins. As for the other numbers, I'd be worried. In 82 innings he's only struck out 39 guys. If you aren't a power pitcher, you can survive on getting the ground ball, it's just that he's not. 1.21 grounders per flies, teamed with his unGodly .238 allowed BABIP. This means that he's received an inexplicable amount of luck in regards to the type of contact being made.

Verdict: Shelton. Big time Shelton.

More after the jump ...

Todd Wellemeyer -- Everytime someone talks about Cards' pitching guru Dave Duncan being a genius I hear "ANTHONY REYES ... KIP WELLS!" blaring in my ear in stereo. Still, there are many more examples of guys pulling a Wellemeyer under his tutelage. Coming into this season, Wellemeyer's numbers were disastrous. As a Cubs fan, I'd seen flashes of what could be a good pitcher in there, but it was eventually buried in a pile of futility. It would seem that Duncan found the silver lining and beautifully exploited it this year. 7-1 with a 2.93 ERA so far, as well as a decently good 62 K in 80 innings. Sure, his BABIP against is .258, but it's always been low for him, even when he sucked (.286 career allowed BABIP).

Verdict: Stud. He's legit and will remain so all season.

Jesse Litsch -- How about this business? You've got focus on Roy Halladay, A.J. Burnett, and the studly young duo ... then Uncle Jesse comes from out of nowhere and straight deals. He's 7-2 with a 3.45 ERA currently with only 11 free passes. Well, it's not really from out of nowhere. He's been steadily progressing in the minors for the past three years, culminating with a 2.24 minor league ERA last season before his call. He just turned 23 in spring training, too, so keeper leagues take note.

Verdict: Stud. Quasi-stud for the rest of this year, legit stud in the future.

Aaron Laffey -- Just as I correctly predicted in Spot Jobs, he's already on his descent. A 1.59 ERA became a 2.98 in just a couple of starts. His minor league ERA was always around 3.00 and he's shown the ability to have good stuff, but he just doesn't strike out enough guys to keep the ERA down where it is. The .271 allowed BABIP is low for him, too, even after the catastrophic start in Texas. He's gonna get rocked a few more times. He's only 23, though, so don't bail in keeper leagues.

Verdict: Shelton for '08, but he has a bright future.

Ryan Dempster -- Greebs already did this little dance on my boy Dempster. Things have changed since that post, though. "Dumptruck" isn't going away. He currently sits with a 7-2 record and a sparkling 2.90 ERA. Walks were a problem earlier this season, but he's gotten those under control. I wanna throw away pitching stats here and just proclaim that he's a different guy. In the off-season he committed himself to an intense workout regimen and transformed himself back into a starting pitcher. Here's an example: he's a good hitter now. He's hitting .209, and his career average is .086. He's crushed a double in the gap in each of his last two starts and he's bar none the best bunter the Cubs have (9 sacs already). This doesn't have anything to do with fantasy, but it's proof that he's done everything to become a complete player this season. That doesn't just go away.

Verdict: Stud, not that I'm biased or anything.

Greg Smith -- Like Laffey, he was also shellacked in Texas on June 1. An ERA that was once 2.54 is now all the way up to 3.74. It will keep going up, he's just not ready yet.

Verdict: Shelton
Stud Or Shelton: Saunders and Wellemeyer Head List of Surprising Starters originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 06 Jun 2008 14:07:00 EST . Hopefully you saw that and added him before the news of his recall broke today, because he's a very solid option in fantasyland. Last year he was added to the Reds with much fanfare and things didn't go particularly as planned. He did come through with a 4-2 record, but the 5.76 ERA was bad as was the 1.57 WHIP.

Things are different now. First of all, according to his triple-A manager, Rick Sweet, he's more mature. He's still only 22, but the second reason I think it's going to be different this time is that the complexion of the expectations and hype surrounding him are a complete 180 from last year at this time. The difference -- no, it's most certainly not the new manager in Cincy -- is that there are two other hyped young arms already establishing themselves in the rotation and one uber-prospect recently inserted into a lineup that already contained a rookie masher. Yes, I believe the hype surrounding Homer this time around is significantly lower because of the presence of Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Jay Bruce, and Joey Votto.

With the added abilities of several largely hyped youngsters around Bailey, he no longer has to shoulder the load of the franchise future by himself, thus the pressure he puts on himself is lower.

Verdict: I'd be careful about having him activated for his matchup this week against the red hot Phillies. After that, though, I'd feel comfortable ranking him right alongside Cueto -- a youngster who has his ups and downs but overall provides the ability to rack up points for the long haul.
(Maybe) The Beginning of the Homer Bailey Era in Cincy, Part Deux originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 12:15:00 EST . It's weird because you rarely hear the hype on him anymore, and he's only 22. The Reds obviously think they tried to bring him aboard too early in his professional career last season, because they are running out the likes of Matt Belisle and Josh Fogg instead of letting Bailey take his lumps in the show. It makes sense, I mean, he had only 64 career minor league starts before this season.

So far this year he's been about the same command-wise as last year in the minors. In 66 2/3 innings he's struck out 54 and walked 29. The walks were the problem in the bigs last year, so the Reds would still like them to come down some more. His ERA (4.05) and WHIP (1.38) are far from impressive, either.

Verdict: I'd still stash him for help come mid-July on. He'll get things figured out soon and once the Reds realize they are out of race they'll start running out their future rotation. Rank him behind sure-things like Max Scherzer and ahead of injury risk gambles like Curt Schilling.

After the jump we'll check out a few others currently toiling in the minors.

Other Potential Minor League Stashees

Nick Adenhart - Angels -- He likely already had his coffee this year. 13 walks and four Ks in only 12 innings did the trick, along with the return of John Lackey to the rotation for the Halos. Ignore except in deep dynasty leagues.

David Price - Rays -- Recently threw down with Pedro in his first start, allowing only a walk and three hits in five shutout innings. Track his progress because he's going to be quite a hyped prospect, and rightfully so. The Rays' rotation has been spectacular, but you never know when injury will strike (Scott Kazmir is prone) or Edwin Jackson hits a rough patch. I'd immediately stash Price to beat the crowd in leagues where you have a large bench.

Adam Miller - Tribe -- An intriguing gamble, to say the least. The Indians do have an abundance of starting pitching at the big league level, but if they trade CC -- and they will if they fall out of the race and/or decide there's no way to keep him after the season -- Miller is one injury away from joining the staff. He currently rocks a 1.88 ERA in triple-A Buffalo. Rank him below Price and Homer but above Adenhart.

Justin Masterson - BoSox -- He's already gone 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in two big league starts. The seven walks in only 12 1/3 innings could prove problematic, but he's one Dice-K bum wing away from a temporary rotation spot for a team that provides nice run support. Immediately add him in deep AL-only leagues now, because he could get the nod as early as Tuesday.

Chris Tillman - O's -- They've been down the uninspiring Hayden Penn path before. While Tillman's only 20, he's dazzling double-A right now with a 6-0 record, 2.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 44 K in 48 innings. When the Orioles fall out of the race this year it will be time to start looking towards the future. Tillman should play into those plans sooner than later. Deepest AL-only leagues with bench space take note, otherwise you should probably just mentally file away this name for next year.

Rich Hill/Sean Marshall/Kevin Hart - Cubbies -- It's pretty evident the Cubs are going to provide run support and a stellar bully to preserve wins for their starters. It's also evident that Jason Marquis sucks. Even if Sean Gallagher lasts in the rotation all season, Marquis won't last and that leaves a spot. There's also the possibility the Cubs trade for an established veteran pitcher, in which case at least one -- and maybe more -- of these three would be included. I'd rank their worth Marshall, Hart, Hill right now. A trade could change things, as Hill may need a change of scenery. The Cubs are Lou Pinella is tired of waiting on the 28 year-old to mature as a pitcher and is locked in a "win now" mentality. This would make Hill the best stashee if you are looking towards August and September. Any of the three in a call-up would be worth a look in really deep leagues, but nothing more until Hill figures out how to throw a strike.

Specific drop/add questions? Email us at Fantasy FanHouse.

Debating Stashability of Homer ... and More Minor Leaguers originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 30 May 2008 15:15:00 EST . Let's profile two arms looking to make a similar move this season.

Brandon Morrow

I would have profiled him anyway, but it's much easier now that he's only needed 25 total pitches to plow through the Red Sox lineup in an inning each on two straight nights. He's been rocking the radar gun in the high 90s as well (not just considering 96 as "high" because he lives in the 98-99 range). On the season he sports Carlos Marmol-like numbers: 1.38 ERA with 18 Ks in 13 innings.

So there's a question to be answered ... if he's too valuable in middle relief, why would he move to the rotation?

Well, the situation dictates that he's got to start eventually. The Mariners have J.J. Putz locked and loaded at closer, and the team is currently going nowhere. If they continue to go nowhere through June, as I believe they will, there is little reason to keep geezers like Jarrod Washburn and Miguel Batista in the rotation while letting Morrow languish in the bullpen.

Verdict: A definite add over other stashees like Schilling and Carpenter because he's healthy. He'll be stretched out and in the rotation by August. You have to love the talent -- he was drafted 5th overall in the same draft where the Yanks nabbed Joba 41st.

Max Scherzer

Yeah, we've covered him ad nauseam thus far. He's also shown the hype would have been worth it had he been allowed to stick in the rotation and acclimate himself to the major league game as a starter. He's got a tough luck 0-2 record, but everything else is stellar. Like the 1.96 ERA, yeah, and how about the 28/8 K/BB in only 23 innings? Yeah, that works. He's a must-have if he goes back to the rotation.

Verdict: A small step below Morrow (wow, really didn't mean to rhyme that) because there's a lesser chance he hits the rotation. The Backs are going to be in the race and if Max establishes himself as a killer setup man a la Marmol while the entire Snake rotation stays healthy, he ain't going anywhere. Still worth it over the injured guys, but more a gamble than Morrow.

As always, email us with specific questions ... but you certainly want either of these guys instead of Barry Zito -- just in case you were wondering.
Stash'Em? You can no longer say, "it's early" once we turn the calendar. With that in mind, I'll be chronicling the usefulness of arms likely sitting on your waiver wire here in the next few days. Remember, most of the time this is assuming you have a deep enough bench that you actually can afford to "stash" someone for an extended amount of time.

Right now we examine two guys from my favorite team's most h<strike>e</strike>ated rival.

Chris Carpenter

He's coming off the famed Tommy John surgery (July '07), and most guys aren't back to their old selves for well over a year (B.J. Ryan excepted). Despite what was termed a setback in the rehab, Carpenter was back on the horse last week. It's really difficult to imagine a starting pitcher being able to come back strong enough 13 months after the surgery, but Carpenter was a stud for a few years for the Redbirds. If they are looking for a nice little punch in arm mid-August and he says -- along with the team doctors, of course -- he's ready, they'll likely roll the dice instead of running out anymore Joel Pineiro.

Verdict: About the same advice I gave for the Curt Schilling situation. You need a deep bench and a player the caliber of Brett Tomko to drop. You'd also need to expect no more than six weeks of production. Really, it's more realistic with Carpenter to only expect a month. When he does come back at full strength, he'll revert to stud form by the third outing.

Mark Mulder

We're right up on the conclusion of the "10 - 14" day shutdown period for Mulder in his rehab. Yipee! That means it's time for Mulder to get shelled and then promptly shutdown again. I'll elaborate:

- Since Mulder got hurt in 2006 he's had two shoulder surgeries and been shut down on at least three separate occasions during comeback attempts due to soreness or discomfort.

- In that same time period, he's won exactly zero games at the major league and triple-A levels. Combining both the aforementioned league stats, Mulder has started six games. He's allowed 45 hits, 12 walks, and 31 earned runs in only 23 2/3 innings, while only striking out 12. So he's got an even K/BB, 2.41 WHIP, and an 11.79 ERA while not even averaging four innings per start ... and, again, I'm lumping in triple-A starts.

Obviously this doesn't add up for a 30 year-old who recently was the winning pitcher in the All-Star game. Unless you realize that he's done some permanent and likely unfixable damage to his wing. He even had bad numbers in '06 before the injury was made official (6-7, 7.14).

Verdict: He's done. Ignore him in all leagues ... keeper and yearly. As much as I respect the guy I'd love for him to be able to at least win a few more games before retiring, but right now it doesn't look good.

As always, please email us with direct questions like, "should I drop Paul Maholm for Carpenter?"
Stash'Em? Just two years ago a lanky lefty named Andrew Miller was on the hill for the UNC Heels as the stand-out performer in the College World Series. Stars of the Final Four or BCS Championship Game drafted sixth overall -- like Miller was -- rarely disappear for a bit before returning to prominence in the NFL or the NBA unless they are on the verge of becoming a bust. In baseball, we get to be patient without "bust" talk for several years.

Dynasty leaguers who have been sitting on Andrew Miller don't have to stress patience much longer. He's on his way to becoming the fantasy ace we were drooling over in Omaha at the '06 CWS. You just have to look past the current season totals, because overall it's not good.

Miller's start was horrendous. After his first three outings the ERA (11.37) was uglier than Gene Keady. This wasn't one glaring outlier killing the ERA because all three starts were pretty equally dreadful. He was shelled again on April 29th against the Dodgers, and the ERA was at 9.12 after six disastrous starts.

Since then, though, a proverbial corner has been turned.

When I say Miller's a must-add (oh, oops, I didn't say that yet ... Miller's a must-add), I want you to only concentrate on the last four starts. This isn't cherry-picking because he did lose a game, one of the them wasn't statistically a quality start, and his potential is enormous.

Three of the four starts of which I speak are admittedly against three subpar offensive squads (Fathers, Nats, Royals), but the numbers breed optimism ... especially in a kid that just turned 23 a few days ago and throws half his games in a pitcher's paradise.

The numbers in those four starts: 25 innings, 4 earned runs, 26 K, 7 BB, 16 hits. So that's more than a strikeout per inning, more than 3/1 K/BB, 1.44 ERA, and a 0.92 WHIP.

His outing last night was a tell-tale sign that good things are coming in the very near future, because he made the Snakes look stupid for seven innings. Nine strikeouts and no runs with only six base-runners for the team that is 2nd in the NL in runs and top five in pretty much every offensive category.

Miller's likely owned in only about two-thirds of the fantasy leagues out there. The number will be rising steadily until he's maxed out, and I recommend you aid in the upward push.

Miller's Fantasy Stock Rising originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 23 May 2008 11:45:00 EST . After Joba tossed 35 pitches tonight against the O's in mop-up duty, his manager proclaimed the the "process has begun."

Several things had to happen for this turn of events, and the most significant is that the Yankees just aren't winning. Phi Hughes and Ian Kennedy didn't do their part, Mike Mussina started badly and sucked last night, and the "New Boss" Hank has been complaining enough that Cashman and Girardi finally were scared enough to make the transition a reality.

Fantasy Spin:

It's going to take several weeks, but Joba's upside is most certainly worth the wait. As Tom Petty taught us, the waiting is the hardest part ... and he wasn't lying. Joba as a starter will eventually be an elite one. He's got better make-up and stuff than both Kennedy and Hughes, in addition to the fact that he's developed much more pedigree and confidence in his service time to this point. Not many of the hitters he's seen have seen his full arsenal of pitches, either. There's no reason to think he's going to go through a down period. Go get this man now if he's available via your waiver wire, and he is in nearly a quarter of all fantasy leagues.

Also realize the offense in the Bronx has been suffering without Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada. ARod is already raking in his second day back and Posada will be back soon enough. The other guys will come around as well.

I actually tried to make this post short so you didn't waste time before grabbing Joba.

It matters that much. Get outta here and make the move.
Joba Coming to a Rotation Near You originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Thu, 22 May 2008 00:36:00 EST . Stash tells you what your play is for these guys.

For those late to the party, the Red Sox signed someone in the off-season who was just two years removed from winning a freaking Cy Young. Turning 35 late next week, he's not ancient by any stretch. He is, however, fat.

Yep, good ol' Bartolo Colon still checks in at 250 while not even standing six feet tall ... but he's no ordinary fat man. He can throw a baseball really hard.

The signing made sense for the Red Sox, with Curt Schilling's injury woes and the unpredictability of youngster Clay Buchholz. Now Buchholz is on the DL with a broken fingernail (I'm sure he's quite chagrined to be sidelined with that -- but fingers matter to pitchers), and the Sox are going to need a replacement for the short-term beginning Tuesday.

Meanwhile Colon has been studly in Triple-A. He entered Thursday with a 1.12 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in eight innings. The seven-to-one K/BB looked enticing as well.

Thursday, the numbers only got better.

I'll let PawSox explain:

Bartolo Colon was magnificent, giving up just one hit in six innings. Colon needed just 64 pitches to get through the outing. The 2005 Cy Young winner fanned 4 and didn't walk anyone.

That takes Fat Bart's ERA down to 0.64 in and his WHIP to an absurd 0.50. With the Red Sox needing the aforementioned replacement starter now is the perfect time to add the former elite pitcher to any bench that has reasonable space (meaning you cut bait on someone like Jim Edmonds, but not Rafeal Furcal).

Now ...

I don't really think he's going to be of much help to your actual team for a bit if at all. He's still only able to throw 64 pitches (otherwise they would have run him out there for another inning the way he was dealing). Realistically, the Red Sox can't get him deep in a game with that low a pitching allowance. Maybe next time he can stretch to 80, and I still don't think that's good enough to really be worth a roster spot in many fantasy leagues.

When he does get the call, be ready to shop him immediately. If you have to hold him, hopefully he starts off quickly. His name has value, and it doesn't hurt that he's playing for the Red Sox.

Basically what I'm saying is that I like your chances of getting a good return for the Cy Young award winning Bartolo who now throws for the best team in the AL ... and I like those chances much more than actually getting a good fantasy season out of the washed up quasi-old fat-man, no matter what his uniform says. He'll be done quite quickly.

VERDICT:

Stash him now, sit on him (better than him sitting on you, right?) until he's recalled, and then deal him before he hurts you. Just ask his owners circa 2006 and 2007. He's still the same cat. He'll hurt again.

Stash Him? As always, we apologize for rubbing salt in the wound of the Shelton family.

If the San Francisco Giants started the season with one strength, it was the starting pitching. Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum represent two of the most promising young starters in all of baseball and - at least before the season started - Barry Zito seemed like a decent #3 pitcher (even if he is the highest paid pitcher in the history of the game.) The rotation was set to be rounded out with Noah Lowry and Kevin Correia, but an injury to Lowry opened up a spot for Jonathan Sanchez.

Sanchez has absolutely taken advantage of this opportunity, though he got off to a rough start against the Brewers, allowing seven ER in just four IP. Owners who have hung tough with him since then have been quite happy, thanks, as Sanchez has only allowed another six earned runs in an additional 29.2 innings. Overall, this season he's 2-1, with 40 K against just 16 walks, with a 3.48 ERA and a respectable 1.28 WHIP. The kid has been dealing, that's for sure. The question is, is he a stud, or a flash in the pan?

Sanchez is definitely worth believing in. First of all, he has something that all managers (and, subsequently, fantasy owners) crave -- a left-handed throwing arm. Better yet, it's one that can rack up some strikeouts, as evidenced by the 10 K's he collected against the free swinging bats of the Cincinnati Reds on April 26.

Owners worried about his lock on a rotation slot should also breathe a sigh of relief - not only is Sanchez making a case on his own, but the competition for those slots is ebbing somewhat as well. As is now obvious to anyone not named Brian Sabean, Zito represents the single worst free agent signing since Mike Hampton, and has been relegated to the bullpen, at least temporarily. Additionally, Lowry has yet to recover from his injury and just recently suffered a setback that should delay his return by about a month.

That's bad news for the Giants, but good news for Sanchez and his owners. While no Giant pitcher is going to be a good bet for wins, Sanchez helps you in the three other starting pitching categories. For NL-only leagues, he's a no brainer from here on out. In mixed leagues, he's certainly worth stashing on your bench - if you have to put Phil Hughes on the shelf, for instance (and you actually want to hold onto him), Sanchez would be an ideal replacement.

Has Jonathan Sanchez Made a Believer Out of You? originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Thu, 01 May 2008 13:49:00 EST . This is based on the perception that he could hit 45 home runs from the shortstop position. A few things derailed that silly notion though. First, his fielding was inadequate for the position. And second -- also more importantly -- he has almost zero patience at the plate.

Witness his 2007 season, which saw him strikeout an absolutely ridiculous 120 times in 111 minor league games. He walked a whopping 45 times and posted a pedestrian .338 OBP. But, man, can he crush the ball. He had 23 homers in 2007, and that has to be considered pretty mediocre as well.

Are things different this year, as we turn a fantasy eye towards the newest prospect to hit the major league scene? Well, a little. He has a ridiculous Pacific Coast League leading eight home runs. And he has six doubles as well, so the power potential is there. But he also has an embarrassing 29:5 K:BB ratio. That's just not good for anyone. And his average is at .273, which isn't entirely shocking, given his past production in that area.

But, Wood's power potential, all of those strikeouts and failures to get on base aside, makes fantasy owners drool. It's a lot less appealing from third than short, sure, but it's still enticing. Which is why Wood is a nice pickup as long as you are not using him for starting purposes. If he comes out hot, you deal him. No questions asked. Don't be suckered, just hope the hype builds and then bank off of it. His second look around the league is going to be a lot uglier, and if you end up starting him for too long, you'll have to eat the average hit he's gonna give you.
Brandon Wood Gets Called Up by Angels originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 02:00:00 EST . It doesn't matter that he wasn't even hitting above the Mendoza line, nor does it matter that he's about to turn 40. Nope, what does matter is that the stature of a hall-of-famer just vacated a lineup slot and someone has to fill it.

For now, we're being treated to a rousing rendition of "Matt Stairs is our DH ... and we really think we are going to compete in the AL!" Good luck with that, Blue Jays brass.

You know what's funny? Stairs' numbers are never bad. Maybe it's that he used to have a mullet, that's he's 5'9" 220 (and it ain't "muscle"), or that he has less charisma than Eric Young on Baseball Tonight (seriously, have you seen that crap?). Whatever the reason, he's not sticking as the DH of the Blue Jays all season. We all know that. I don't need any other evidence than the fact that you don't cut The Big Hurt to play Matt Stairs all season. You just don't.

Those of us with foresight in Fantasyland know what to do ...

Who's next? It's always about that ... and I don't mean the ridiculously overplayed and quite lame ESPN faux-term. I just mean the next guy to step into Frank's vacated position. I'll let you in on the "secret." It's a dude named Adam.

Adam Lind

Keep your eyes on him in shallow fantasy leagues, and snag him sooner rather than later in deep leagues. He actually had a quite uninspiring showing in The Show last season, so you could wait on him a tad bit longer than a Jay Bruce. You know, the residue creates stigma. Still, he doesn't turn 25 until July 17th. We'd be doing ourselves a horrible injustice to ignore a guy just because he didn't rake at 24. Few do. Even with the bad numbers across the board he managed 11 bombs in only 290 big-league at-bats. In the minors he's always driven in runs and hit for power. This current season he's raking to the tune of a .365 average with 3 jacks and 16 RBIs in 18 games. One problem that has always plagued Lind is the fact that he punches out a ton more than he walks, but so far this year he's drawn six walks compared to 10 Ks. The Ks aren't really down, but the walks are up ... a sign he's becoming more selective. And he's not even 25.

I'd keep an eye on him ... especially if you have Matt Stairs and not Frank Thomas.

If you have Frank, please keep him. He's going to hit. That's what the career 157 OPS+er does. Overreacting to moves is an amateurish fantasy move ... and we're all pros.

Right?
Without the Big Hurt, Lind is In originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Sat, 26 Apr 2008 00:11:00 EST . Fuentes, as you likely remember (from a few hours ago), was the closer last year who lost his job immediately after being named to the All Star team. Corpas took over and never let go of the gig, helping to shut down opposing teams in the midst of a ROX-tacular ROX-tober. But, clearly, he has faltered this year, going just four for eight in save opps.

'I think what you need to do is what's best for the club and that's to give the ball to Brian right now, get the heat off Manny and give him an opportunity to work his way out,' Hurdle said.

While Fuentes had accepted his role as a setup man and not complained, it was no secret that he wanted to close. He has made the All-Star team each of the past three seasons as a closer and was off to a good start last year before his bad run in June eventually led to a stint on the disabled list.

I like this move. A lot actually. As much guff as I gave Hurdle for benching Troy Tulowitzki in what I thought was a premature manner, it's refreshing to see someone with a quick hook on his closer, and an unwillingness to recognize when someone just isn't working out. (Pointing fingers all up in your face, Ned Yost.

Bonus Fantasy Spin: Fuentes is an immediate add, obviously, given that he will have the opportunity to save games for the Rockies (for the rest of the season, presumably, if he doesn't screw it up.) I would not drop Corpas in larger leagues just quite yet though -- he can be a dominant setup guy who provides nice middle relief K's and while Hurdle made the switch now, there's no guarantee it stays like that all season. Smaller leagues can dump Corpas immediately though.

Brian Fuentes: Your New, Old Rockies Closer originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:18:00 EST .
