Tom Coughlin made that announcement (earlier today) after Jacobs missed his third straight practice with an injured left knee.

"We just didn't feel like he'd be ready to play," Coughlin said.

Derrick Ward, who is second on the team in rushing and sports an impressive 4.8 yards per carry, will replace Jacobs with Ahmad Bradshaw helping out with the load.

How big is this for the Cowboys' chance of winning? In their first meeting of the season, a 35-14 Giants win, Jacobs carried 17 times for 117 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys already have a rather stingy rush defense, so missing Jacobs will only give the front line a better chance to disrupt Eli Manning and the passing game.

Some of them are primed to pull a Brutus on you and handcuff your team in the playoffs.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Brutus Boys:

Brandon Jacobs, Giants - My fantasy football affection for Jacobs hasn't been a secret, but ever since he tweaked his knee he's been unreliable. The Giants could easily hold him out of the rest of the regular season, as they'll easily walk to the top overall playoff seed.

Marion Barber, Cowboys - He hurt his calf favoring his injured toe. All of a sudden Tashard Choice is coveted in fantasy circles. Even if Barber plays, he won't be 100 percent -- which is really bad in light of his punishing run-style -- and faces the stout Giants and Ravens defenses.

Brett Favre, Jets - He exploded against the Cardinals at home, and had five other weeks where he was at least serviceable. You definitely could have made the playoffs with him as your quarterback, as long as you were strong elsewhere. Of course, in the past two weeks, he's sucked against the Broncos and 49ers, neither of whom could be confused with the 2000 Ravens on defense. I'm not even sure the visit to Seattle in Week 16 makes him desirable at this point.

Clinton Portis, Redskins - He was the best player in fantasy football heading into the Redskins' bye week, and since then he's been bad three out of four weeks. He's hurt -- though he claims he's not -- been benched, been ineffective, and now he's feuding with his coach.

Marshawn Lynch, Bills - He's been inconsistent, but the high points have been good enough his owners have let that slide. No more, as the Bills suck now and are using Fred Jackson in the red zone more often. You've gotta play him in Week 16 against the Broncos, but if you are counting on him this week in the Meadowlands against the Jets' stellar run defense, you likely won't be playing in Week 16.

Frank Gore, 49ers - A high ankle sprain on a running back is never good news. Hopefully you can survive without him this week, because if he gets healthy the Rams await in Week 16.

Santana Moss, Redskins - He's blown up twice, and mixed in four other solid games. Other than that, he's been terrible and hasn't helped owners since Week 8. I'm not expecting a change anytime soon.

Lee Evans, Bills - Similar to Moss, Evans appeared to be finally carving out some consistency in Weeks 4-8. Now, the quarterback situation in Buffalo has made Evans his old, unreliable self. You can gamble you'll get that long touchdown, but you could also end up with a three point performance.

Antonio Gates, Chargers - The once-gold-standard fantasy tight end hasn't accrued more than three fantasy points since Week 10. For the record, I do think he breaks through this week against KC, but the Week 16 game in Tampa Bay isn't lovely.

Reggie Wayne, Colts - He's one of those guys you just can't bench, but he's killed owners for three straight weeks against subpar competition. More of the same for the next two weeks. You just have to put him in and hope he plays like himself.

Willie Parker, Steelers - Hey, he got you off to a 1-0 start!

It's one thing if you counted on J.T. O'Sullivan or Peyton Hillis to carry you to championship gold, but it's quite another to have one of your elite players sell you out when you are so close to the crown. It's like a dagger to the lumbar.

Et tu, Brute?
Eye on the Prize: The Brutus Boys Set You Up and Will Knock You Down originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 11:30:00 EST . Going into Week 15, the most nerve-racking of all fantasy weeks in my opinion, we have no less than five superstar running backs with totally uncertain futures after suffering injuries.

At this point, we at Fantasy FanHouse do not know much more than you about these situations, but we will attempt to shed some light on how to approach them (with more definitive updates coming later this week).

Broncos: Peyton Hillis / Tatum Bell - You can't paint a turd. Sure, Peyton Hillis is officially on the injured reserve, which will inevitably lead many fantasy players to jump all over Tatum Bell, but the problem with this situation is you are still talking about Tatum Bell -- the same guy who got cut by the Detroit Lions. It is conceivable that cutting Bell was another event in a long line of boneheaded moves by the Lions, but I wouldn't stake my fantasy playoffs on Bell if I were you. He may have looked decent against the Chiefs, but temper the expectations against better run defenses in Carolina and Buffalo. In fact, if you insist on starting Bell, I have a red hot investment portfolio for you that includes sub-prime mortgages and Lehman Brothers stock that I'd like you talk to you about as well.

49ers: Frank Gore / DeShaun Foster - Frank Gore looks to have a fairly serious ankle sprain. There is no telling as of yet if he will play at this point, but this news makes DeShaun Foster an obvious pickup. In fact, to put my money where my mouth is, I already added Foster and plan to start him this week for sure if Gore sits. There is an additional question mark as to Michael Robinson's level of activity given Gore's absence. Martz is supposedly a big fan of Robinson, so he might see some carries, but I expect Foster to carry the load. The matchups are decent with Miami this week and a tasty St. Louis game for the fantasy Super Bowl in Week 16.

Colts: Joseph Addai / Dominic Rhodes - Addai's injury status and effectiveness are totally in question this week and, with the Lions on the docket for Week 15, definitely snag Rhodes if you can get him. Check back with us later in the week to see how things unfold, but given Addai's lame effort against Cincy and Dominic Rhodes' nice touchdown scamper, Rhodes might be a good option this week.

Giants: Brandon Jacobs / Derrick Ward - This one is a toss up as Jacobs has been messing with fantasy owners all season with his knee injury. If he plays, you have to stick with Jacobs, but at this point Derrick Ward is a huge add if he is still available. While Jacobs' testing showed no structural damage, he did say he tweaks his knee every week and this time it was a particularly bad tweak. If you want my gut feeling, which is worth about as much as a bus ticket, I think Jacobs is going to miss this upcoming game.

Cowboys: Marion Barber / Tashard Choice - Even though I went against the grain in our Sunday Tailgate and predicted a nice game from Tashard Choice against a dominant Pittsburgh defense, I don't think it's wise to bank on him from here on out. Apparently, Barber missed the Week 14 game due to a calf injury as opposed to the toe injury that everyone thought. I have no idea if this bodes better or worse for Barber, considering that overcompensating for the toe caused the calf injury. Either way, the Cowboys face the Giants and the Ravens in the next two weeks, so you're playing with fire with both backs. Keep Choice around if you already have him, but only start him as a No. 3 RB if you have no other good options.
Fantasy Backfield Shakeups originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 10:45:00 EST . There are a couple of critical injuries to keep an eye on for Thursday, so take note as you prepare your for your last hurrah before the fantasy playoffs. As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are sitting pretty from a fantasy perspective. Everybody is good to go.

The Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo - Tony Romo went back to wearing a splint on his finger during practice on Tuesday, but he will play on Turkey Day. Whether or not he plays with the splint is unknown at this point, but regardless, after last week's gigantic numbers, start him no matter what, because he should pick apart the porous Seattle defense.

Jason Witten - Witten continues to nurse his sore ribs, but he will definitely play on Thursday. The real question is do fantasy owners stick with Witten despite his one catch per game average over the past four games? I would say yes, start Witten on Thursday, because the Seahawks have a below average pass defense and he should return to form. Witten also has a tendency to score touchdowns on Turkey Day (two TDs in three years), so keep him in there.

The Detroit Lions

Kevin Smith - Kevin Smith left the game against Tampa Bay last week with a shoulder injury after posting solid numbers for the third straight week. While Smith has been limited in practice this week, he is expected to play and despite the dominant pass defense, Tennessee is beatable on the ground. Furthermore, Albert Haynesworth is questionable this week after taking a knee to the head from teammate Javon Kearse last week and being forced to leave the game. Thus, Smith looks start-able for a flex spot or No. 3 running back.

The Philadelphia Eagles

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook continues to struggle with swelling in the knee and soreness in the ankle. He looks ready to play, but the looming questions remain: a) will he get a full load of touches after a couple lighter-than-usual weeks and b) will the Cardinals load up against the ground game and short passing game, given McNabb's awful play as of late? While these are valid questions, Brian Westbrook is a star in this league and sooner or later it will come back to haunt you if you decide to second guess him.

Correll Buckhalter - Buckhalter left his Week 12 game with a sprained knee ligament and will miss this week's game for certain and likely a couple of additional weeks. Lorenzo Booker will assume his role as support for Brian Westbrook, so Westbrook owners might want to handcuff with Booker -- if you believe in the whole handcuffing thing.

The Seattle Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck appears to be pretty close to 100 percent and will certainly play this weekend, but since he has turned in two abysmal performances since returning from the back injury, I wouldn't touch him this week.

The Tennessee Titans

Titans D - Temper your expectations for the Titans defense this week as Haynesworth might be out of commission and several players on the defense are banged up. That said, let's not get crazy here; the Titans play the Lions and Daunte Culpepper is starting at quarterback, so they remain an obvious start.

Injuries to Watch: Turkey Day originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 15:33:00 EST . A 20-point loss and some Sweet Valley High action later, Miami is 6-5, wondering where it all went wrong, and have a lot of work to do to keep (the playoff) hope alive for January.

Making things tougher: the team will be without its leading receiver, Greg Camarillo, who's done for the year after suffering a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Head coach Tony Sparano was very matter-of-fact about the whole thing: "It's hard. You don't want to lose a player like him. Somebody has to pick up the slack.''

Not sure who that somebody will be; Ted Ginn is the obvious choice, but who becomes the No. 2 option, Ernest Wilford? That was a joke. Of course he doesn't. Rookie Davone Bess has been a pleasant surprise, hauling in 24 passes in spot duty.

And the Dolphins could always rely on the tight ends and running backs, too, particularly with all the Wildcattery going on, not to mention Chad Pennington's inability to consistently throw the ball more than 20 yards down the field.

Camarillo came out of nowhere last December to lead the Dolphins to their first and only win of 2007. He then parlayed that into a three-year, $6 million contract extension, which he signed last week. And while his contract is well deserved, it's a shame that Camarillo won't be able to help the team for another nine months.
Dolphins Lose Greg Camarillo for Season, Now Lack Depth at Wide Receiver originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 13:15:00 EST . The offensive line is stellar, and the duo of Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw will be more than adequate in attempting to replace the production of the studly Jacobs.

Jacobs will be fine moving forward, and probably could have played this week. The Giants just figured to play it safe and make sure he's completely healed before bringing him back. The 9-1 record and the abilities of Ward and Bradshaw had to have made the decision much easier.

Fantasy Spin:
I'd definitely get Ward active in almost all formats, and Bradshaw is a quality flex play or RB3 in larger leagues. I still expect the Giants to lean heavily on the run, but this does bump up the value of Eli Manning a hair.
Fantasy Alert: Brandon Jacobs Will Not Play Today in Arizona originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Sun, 23 Nov 2008 14:57:00 EST . As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Atlanta Falcons

Roddy White - This season's superstar bust-out receiver missed Wednesday and Thursday practice with a back injury. The deep back bruise is not expected to cause White to miss time and he practiced on Friday, but keep him in the corner of your eye just in case.

The Baltimore Ravens

Derrick Mason - Despite a partially dislocated shoulder, Mason made good last week with seven catches for 82 yards. He should be good to go this week as well.

The Cleveland Browns

Kellen Winslow - Quickly becoming one of this year's leading fantasy frustrators, Kellen Winslow has not returned to practice despite an MRI indicating no structural damage in his shoulder. While normally the positive MRI would be a good sign, Coach Crennel says the only way he sees the field is if he shows full motion in the shoulder, which I assume means actually practicing. You might be wise to plan on another option should Junior disappoint yet again.

Brady Quinn - Quinn suffered a small fracture his right index finger last week against the Browns. While Quinn played with the injury and should play again this week, this is enough to bench him if you previously considered him for the starting spot this week.

The Dallas Cowboys

Felix Jones - All hopes of a Felix Jones sleeper playoff run are officially dashed as he was placed on injured reserve for the season.

The Denver Broncos

Selvin Young - It never ends with this bloody backfield; Selvin Young returned to Thursday practice in a limited capacity, making Peyton Hillis a little riskier for a start this week. Young is not expected to see the field this week, but unless you really need to fill a hole, it's probably wise to steer clear of this backfield given the potential splits between Hillis, Young, and Tatum Bell.

The Houston Texans

Matt Schaub - Schaub looks to be sidelined for another couple weeks with Sage Rosenfels filling in during the meantime. Schaub suffered ligament damage in the knee, so it's probably not worth holding onto him considering he'll be coming back just in time for the fantasy playoffs and his starting job might be in question by then.

The New Orleans Saints

Reggie Bush - We're getting ready to start carbon-dating Reggie Bush's knee injury. Bush was slated to come back two weeks ago, but has yet to practice at full speed and is uncertain yet again this week. While it is too early to make a ruling, proceed with caution as he does not seem ready to go quite yet.

Marques Colston - Unfortunately, Marques Colston continues to be bothered with the knee and has not been practicing full speed. Things look good in terms of his likelihood of playing this weekend, but against a tough Green Bay pass defense, his start-ability is questionable this week.

The New York Giants

Plaxico Burress - The perpetual pain-in-the-ass, Plaxico Burress, came down with a mysterious hamstring injury mid-week and is now listed as questionable. More importantly, it appears Tom Coughlin is fed up with Plax's inability to practice through minor injuries on a regular basis. In other words, Coughlin is finally realizing what we have all thought for years now; Plaxico fakes injuries during the week, because football practice sucks.

Brandon Jacobs - Jacobs' knee injury originally looked suspicious given the lack of disclosure from the Giants camp, but Jacobs practiced better than he expected and remains entirely optimistic as to his availability this week. Plan to start Jacobs this week, but set the alarm for 12:30 EST to double-check just in case it looks as though you'll need to plug someone in before the one o'clock games start.

The Oakland Raiders

Darren McFadden - McFadden should see a decent workload this week. I'd expect McFadden to post some decent numbers this week against Oakland's arch-nemesis, the Broncos.

The Philadelphia Eagles

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook regressed back in his injury status with swelling in the knee and soreness in the ankle. At this point, Westbrook remains a game-time decision, but Andy Reid already indicated that Correll Buckhalter will receive an increased workload. Check in at game-time, but Westbrook appears to be in pretty bad shape for this week's game.

The San Francisco 49ers

Arnaz Battle - I know everyone is going to be heartbroken by this one, but Arnaz Battle will be inactive for Sunday's game against Dallas.

The St. Louis Rams

Steven Jackson - Looks like Steven Jackson owners can kiss their playoff hopes goodbye as he will miss his fourth game in five contests this weekend. Jackson's lingering thigh injury is officially becoming a season-killer at this point.

The Tampa Bay Bucs

Earnest Graham - Graham is officially hanging up the cleats for the season as he headed to the injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury against the Vikings. Graham's value was dwindling anyway, so hopefully owners seized the opportunity and swiped Warrick Dunn on the cheap.

The Washington Redskins

Clinton Portis - Portis missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, while going very light on Friday, but given the fact that he played last week with the injury, he should be available. Consider him a game-time decision with the odds in favor of a start.

Injuries to Watch: Week 12 originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 17:18:00 EST . Going into the game, the Ravens had only allowed one rushing touchdown all season and were the top-ranked run defense. Just because the Giants were able to pile up 207 rushing yards and two touchdowns doesn't mean the Ravens' run defense is all of a sudden suspect.

If anything, the Ravens are going home in a very foul mood. As little success as the Eagles have had running lately, and considering Westbrook's sitting out practice this week, I don't think I'd be starting the usual must-start-as-long-as-he's-playing stud in many leagues. If any at all.
Beware of Brian Westbrook This Week originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 16:22:00 EST . Even though they won last week, the Colts were shredded on the ground by the Houston Texans, specifically rookie Steve Slaton. Slaton went for 156 rushing yards on only 14 carries.

This week, the Colts get to face LaDanian Tomlinson and the San Diego Chargers. I don't think it would be overstating things to say that the game hinges upon whether or not Sanders -- the reigning defensive player of the year -- is able to play. Sure, the defense still isn't great against the run when he plays, but they are able to make enough stops to win the overwhelming majority of their games.

As of today, it's still up in the air:
The status of Sanders won't be determined until Saturday or Sunday. He hasn't practiced since experiencing swelling in his right knee in practice leading up to last Sunday's game with Houston.
Fantasy Spin:
I'd be starting Tomlinson regardless, but if Sanders doesn't play, LdT is easily the top fantasy player for the weekend.
Colts Still Unsure About Bob Sanders' Status originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 14:13:00 EST . So when he returned from injury earlier this season, we naturally let him glide right back towards the top of our weekly rankings. He paid instant dividends against Atlanta, shredding them for 209 total yards and two scores.

Since then, though, he's been mediocre. In the last three games, Westbrook has only totaled 147 rushing yards and 79 receiving yards. That's an average of only 75 all-purpose yards, and that's not our Brian Westbrook. He has also failed to find the end-zone.

Let's sort through some possible explanations:

1. He's just not that good. Um, no. Move on, and how dare you for even thinking that.

2. He's injured. He is still a bit banged up, and he's admitted as much. The only thing is, he destroyed a good Atlanta defense in his return from injury, and he's played well when playing through injuries in the past. Are we really to believe it's worse this time around and he's getting worse? I don't buy it.

3. He's not getting the ball enough. Against the Seahawks, Westbrook did have 26 touches, but in the past two games his touches have been curtailed. He only had 16 touches against the Giants and 17 against the Bengals. Both games were close, too, so I'm not understanding why the Eagles are going away from their most potent weapon. In the Bengals game it was especially puzzling. Donovan McNabb was brutal, giving the ball to the other team like he was Rex Grossman. Westbrook was averaging over four yards per carry, yet he only ran with it 14 times. Why not in the 21-24 range?

4. The Eagles aren't using him properly. They seem to be falling in love with the Wildcat formation and the use of DeSean Jackson. That's fine, but it's not like Westbrook is Christian Okoye. He's quite mobile, so why isn't he the beneficiary of the Wildcat? When your best player is only touching the ball 17 times, you have to find more, creative ways to get him the football.

I'm more convinced that reasons three and four are to blame than two. He'll be fine if the Eagles go back to making him the central figure in the offense who gets 25 touches a game.

Things won't be easy this weekend, as the Ravens defense will look to bounce back at home. They'll key on Westbrook all game.

The bottom line, though, is that you never sit Brian Westbrook in fantasy football. You just have to hope, at this point, that his fortunes turn.
What Is Wrong with Brian Westbrook? originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 14:41:00 EST . Considering our fantasy season has the playoffs from Weeks 14-16 or 15-16 in most sane leagues, he's irrelevant for fantasy football purposes the rest of the way.

Moving forward, what can we expect from ...

... Warrick Dunn?
He was already a waiver option, but now we know more about the Graham injury. In the near future, simply put: Tons. Dunn was held to only 53 yards on the ground yesterday, but it was against the very stout Vikings interior defense. He did have 24 touches, which is a precursor of the workload he can expect for at least the next few games. Even at 33 years old and less than 190 pounds, Dunn is still averaging 4.4 yards per carry this season.

Even better news for Dunn owners, the Bucs are playing the Lions this week. You know, the worst run defense in the NFL, a.k.a. the team who was dismantled by Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams yesterday to the tune of three touchdowns and 250 yards on 29 carries.

Um, yeah, get Dunn active in Week 12.

... Cadillac Williams?
Caddy was not on the active roster this past weekend, so he's stil a long-shot to get into the game. If he does work himself into game shape, however, there's a tasty matchup waiting for him in Week 16 -- a home tilt versus the San Diego Chargers. If your team is playoff-bound and you have someone gathering dust on your bench, Cadillac is worth the gamble. Before then, however, and it doesn't look good. We were given false hope last week, sadly.

... Clifton Smith?
He's only had seven carries all season. Four came on Sunday against the Vikes, but there's no reason to believe he'll begin stealing carries from Dunn -- especially since they are very similar in size. Barring injury, he's not worth a spot.

... Jeff Garcia and the passing attack?
If anything, this increases the value because of Dunn's ability as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. Jon Gruden's also going to have to pass a bit more to keep defenses out of the box, in light of the fact that Dunn's too old and small to take a huge beating between the tackles. With some soft defenses coming up, Garcia's a sneaky QB2 with potential to dazzle. Keep an eye on Antonio Bryant as well.
Fantasy Football Fallout: Earnest Graham Out for the Season originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 16:50:00 EST . Hopefully you learned your lesson Thursday night to not put all your stock into weather reports. As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Baltimore Ravens

Derrick Mason - Despite a partially dislocated shoulder, Mason plans to make the trip to New York and participate in the game against the Giants. While he is not a great start, I do believe he will play. Keep in mind this will be his 100th straight game, so Mason has a vested interest in getting out there on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers

Jonathan Stewart - Stewart seems to be recovering well from his painful heel injury, although with the Lions on tap and DeAngelo Williams playing so well, we might not see too much of Stewart until next week.

The Chicago Bears

Kyle Orton - Kyle Orton practiced both Wednesday and Thursday, but his ankle was wrapped and he is still limited in his mobility. If you are considering starting Orton this week, keep a close eye on the situation as there is no clear word on his availability.

Brandon Lloyd - Brandon Lloyd is back at practice and looks to be finally nearing 100%. Keep a close eye on Lloyd, because he could be a great waiver pickup very soon. With Orton playing, I have my eye on Lloyd for a sleeper down the stretch.

The Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo - Tony Romo returned to practice this week and should finally return to "save" the ailing Cowboys.

The Houston Texans

Matt Schaub - Schaub looks to be sidelined for another three weeks with Sage Rosenfels filling in during the meantime. Schaub suffered ligament damage in the knee, so it's probably not worth holding onto him considering he'll be coming back just in time for the fantasy playoffs and his starting job might be in question by then.

The Indianapolis Colts

Reggie Wayne - Wayne missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, but Tony Dungy hopes to get him on the practice field on Friday and ready to play on Sunday. With Anthony Gonzalez also questionable and the Colts in a battle for a playoff spot, expect Wayne to play.

The Kansas City Chiefs

Larry Johnson - LJ returns this week amidst a roller coaster of publicity. While coach Edwards expects to work him back into the offense, it will be interesting to see how he fits in as Kansas City has been functioning with more spread sets and Tyler Thigpen running the show via the skies.

The New Orleans Saints

Reggie Bush - Reggie Bush initally looked ready to come back this week, but the odds seem to be slipping for his return. While it is too early to rule him out, if he does not practice Friday, he will be more of a doubtful than a questionable. Regardless, check up on Bush right up until game-time as this could go either way.

Marques Colston - Unfortunately, Marques Colston is struggling with the knee again and has not been practicing full speed. Things look good in terms of his likelihood of playing this weekend, but clearly he is not back to 100%.

The Oakland Raiders

Darren McFadden - McFadden will finally return to action this week after a couple nasty bouts of turf toe. The Raiders are pretty much in shambles at this point, so McFadden's return could make a huge impact.

The Philadelphia Eagles

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook says he is feeling better this week and expects better results than his mediocre effort versus the Giants. He remains an obvious start.

The Pittsburgh Steelers

Willie Parker - Fast Willie is on track to participate fully in Sunday's game against the Chargers.

The Seattle Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck looks ready to return after a solid week of practice. I'd refrain from the start this week, but keep him on the roster to see how things develop. Personally, I don't like him much as a starter even when he does return.

The San Francisco 49ers

Frank Gore - Gore suffered what initially appeared to be a concussion, but Mike Singletary now deems it a neck strain. He missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, but all parties say he should be ready to play against an accommodating St. Louis run defense.

The St. Louis Rams

Steven Jackson - After returning to practice and looking like a sure thing this week, Steven Jackson tightened up and now looks very doubtful for this week's game against the 49ers. Check on him at game time, but definitely make other plans.

The Tampa Bay Bucs

Earnest Graham - Graham looks ready to return, but his value it not was it used to be. Between Warrick Dunn and potentially Cadillac Williams, he is questionable even as a #3 running back. He still might get some goal-line action though, so you could do worse.
Injuries to Watch: Week 11 originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 17:30:00 EST . Woo hoo!

So the fact that SJax practiced Wednesday was basically a tease to St. Louis fans -- well, sort of, judging from their message board community, it seems like most hate his guts at this point -- and his fantasy football owners. Apparently the coaches reviewed the tape of Wednesday's practice and he didn't look like himself, and now the thigh is swollen again. His chances of playing, according to head coach Jim Haslett?
"I doubt if it'll happen to be honest with you," Haslett said. "But we'll see. You never know."
Jackson himself is quite unhappy.
"When I initially hurt myself in the Dallas game, I kind of thought maybe a day or two," Jackson said. "I really didn't think I would miss a game, let alone two or three. So it's frustrating because my thoughts were it was just kind of a strain, that I would probably need a couple days off and I'd be back. But for it to linger like this, it really makes you wonder what's really going on there."

"As a football player, you're always taught that you can play hurt but not injured," Jackson said. "We've been treating it like it's just me being hurt, and maybe we should treat it like I'm injured. I don't blame anyone. I'm not blaming the (training) staff or the coaching staff because I want to get out there more than anybody. Maybe I just have to sit myself down and kind of allow it to heal itself."
Yeah, well the difference is that it's tough to play through a weakened part of your strength. Quarterbacks can't play through injured fingers in their throwing hand (Tony Romo), receivers can't play through injured thumbs (Marques Colston), and Jackson can't play without fully healthy legs.

It doesn't make him less of a man or competitor, because he's just not healthy enough to play. It really annoys me when people start hurling accusations because they are still bitter he held out and makes a lot of money. If you don't like cheering for guys who make a lot of money, professional sports aren't for you.

Update: He's definitely not playing.
Don't Count on Steven Jackson Playing originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 14:30:00 EST . The one time this season they actually looked like a functioning offense he was busy puncturing the Cowboys defense for 160 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Since the snafu of Jackson trying to make it back too quickly a few weeks ago, Head Coach Jim Haslett has taken the approach that Jackson won't be playing on Sunday if he isn't able to practice full-go during the week.

Wednesday Jackson was able to practice, but he wasn't full speed.
"He worked better today. We'll work him tomorrow and then hopefully make a decision," coach Jim Haslett said. "I know it's a lot better, but is it good enough? I don't know yet."
Thus, neither do we. Look for some news on this situation tomorrow, because it appears the big test will come Thursday in practice.
Steven Jackson Practices Wednesday, Big Test Coming Today originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 09:15:00 EST . As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Arizona Cardinals

Larry Fitzgerald- Fitty missed his Wednesday practice and was not a full participant on Thursday due to a thumb injury. Remember though, this is Larry Fitzgerald, so even if he only had one hand he would be a must-start.

The Baltimore Ravens

Willis McGahee - Willis McGahee is part of the fantasy circus this week after Ray Rice filled in with a humongous game last week. Now Baltimore's offensive coordinator, Cam Cameron, looks to be leaning toward Rice regardless, but nothing is set as of this point. Given McGahee's lingering injury, I would sit this week out and see what happens unless some very concrete news surfaces about McGahee's availability and the safety of his starting job.

Ray Rice - As if the backfield situation in Baltimore was not confusing enough already, Ray Rice has been limited in practice this week with a chest injury. Still, he looks ready to go and should be a pretty strong start this week.

The Carolina Panthers

Jonathan Stewart - Stewart seems to have pretty serious pain in his heel and has been wearing the boot. At this point, he is considered day-to-day, but this seems worse than just day-to-day. He explained that he feels intense pain every time he puts pressure on the foot, so I'd go elsewhere this week. Plus, even if he is healthy, he'll be sharing carries with DeAngelo Williams.

The Chicago Bears

Kyle Orton - Kyle Orton missed practice this week and will not play. Hang onto him though, because he should be back in a week or two.

Brandon Lloyd - Brandon Lloyd is back at practice and looks to be finally nearing 100%. Keep a close eye on Lloyd, because given the duration of his injury, he could be a great waiver pickup very soon. The real question now is if Grossman and Lloyd have the chemistry that sparked earlier in the season with between he and Orton.

The Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo - Tony Romo returned to practice this week. The Cowboys have a bye week, so it's not a bad time to think about trading for Romo or even TO.

The Denver Broncos

Ryan Torain - Serves you all right for violating the cardinal rule of fantasy football; beware of the Broncos' backfield. Somehow it always comes back to bite you. Torain left Thursday night's game with an injury after a meteoric start to the game and is now headed to the IR. Tough break for Torain and his owners.

The Houston Texans

Matt Schaub - Schaub looks to be sidelined for up to a month with Sage Rosenfels filling in for the meantime. Schaub suffered ligament damage in the knee, so it's probably not worth holding onto him considering he'll be coming back just in time for the fantasy playoffs and his starting job might be in question by then. Let's face it, we are not talking about Tom Brady here.

The Kansas City Chiefs

Larry Johnson - LJ will miss the week 10 game for certain with a suspension, but Herm Edwards announced that he will be back in the lineup for week 11. I don't see the rationale in picking him up at this point as he will probably get suspended again when his trial comes around just in time for the fantasy playoffs. Four shady domestic violence incidents in five years is enough to keep someone off your roster in my book.

The New England Patriots

Sammy Morris - The situation looks the same in New England. Sammy Morris will likely miss another week as the knee has still not recovered. Lamont Jordan is also looking unavailable, so the carries will likely be split between BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk.

The New Orleans Saints

Reggie Bush - Reggie Bush will most likely not be available this week and is targeting a week 11 return. He has not been ruled out for week 10 just yet, but it's not looking at all likely.

The New York Jets

Laveranues Coles - Coles seems to remain on the injury report every week but he plays every week. He should be fine.

Jerricho Cotchery - Cotchery has practiced light this week with the shoulder injury, but this is nothing new. He should be fine for St. Louis.

The Oakland Raiders

Darren McFadden - McFadden just cannot seem to beat this toe injury. At this point, his worth is becoming entirely questionable. It's hard to rationalize starting him in any games down the stretch as the toe injury clearly is not improving according to plan.

The Philadelphia Eagles

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook underwent a light load in practice this week, but that's par for the course for Westbrook. He is an obvious start.

The Pittsburgh Steelers

Willie Parker - Willie Parker missed practice on Thursday and is expected to also miss the week 10 game against Indianapolis. After finally returning for week nine, Parker apparently re-injured himself at some point in the third quarter.

Ben Roethlisberger - Roethlisberger sat out of Thursday practice, but aims to give it a go on Friday. Considering his poor performance last week, the ligament damage in his pinkie, and a partially separated shoulder, start him at your own risk the rest of the season. There are probably better waiver wire options available as opposed to starting Ben at this point.

The Seattle Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck looks to miss another week due to his inured back. He hoped to return to practice today, but regardless, do not start him until we know for certain when he will return. Keep him on the roster to see how things develop, but I don't like him much as a starter even when he does.

The St. Louis Rams

Stephen Jackson - After missing Wednesday and Thursday practice, Coach Haslett has given little indication that Jackson will play this weekend. Unless Jackson goes full speed today - which is entirely doubtful - expect Haslett to opt for Kenneth Darby or Samkon Gado this wee.

Injuries to Watch: Week 10 originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 17:25:00 EST . Both sides had several fantasy relevant players going. The uncertainly of the Broncos seemingly crumbling offense teamed with JD McCoy's debut as a starter made for great theater, and we were not let down. Let's run through the major players and dissect what we saw and what it means moving forward.

Brady Quinn
We didn't see many mistakes, did we? He's got weapons, and he used them quite well last night. He especially loved his tight end, Kellen Winslow. Unfortunately, Winslow took away any hope of a miracle comeback when he let a fourth down pass slip right through his hands on the Browns final offensive play. The Browns have to be pleased with the numbers from their rookie. He connected on 23 of 35 attempts for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Most importantly, he didn't turn the ball over.

You have to curb your enthusiasm a bit, because the Broncos have an absolute pathetic defense which has been decimated via injury and futility. On the other hand, Quinn certainly showed he's capable of a big fantasy game. He's going to improve as time moves further, so when you see him facing the Texans (Week 12), get him active. He's a matchup-based start.

Jamal Lewis
I was surprised he didn't find more running room against the atrocious Denver run defense, gaining only 60 yards on 19 carries, but he did find the end-zone. It may be a bad omen for Lewis' owners that the output of Jerome Harrison and Josh Cribbs -- on end-arounds -- was much more efficient. The two gained 96 yards on eight carries. Lewis may be relegated to between-the-tackles work from here on out and the average yards per carry would suffer. The bright side is he'll still be seeing goal-line carries.

Braylon Edwards
He only caught one pass for 15 yards. There was a decent chunk gained by Edwards later, but it was negated by a Winslow penalty. You can't give up on him, but it would appear his bust of a season is continuing.

Donte Stallworth
Pedestrian totals for a pedestrian player. He's never to be trusted in fantasy.

Jay Cutler
Um, yeah. Glad I posted to buy-low on him earlier this week. Wow. Early on, he had thrown the interception and no touchdowns, but a 93 yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal ignited Cutler to an obscene stat-line. Yes, you are reading those 447 yards correctly, and the three touchdown passes were a cherry on top.

Brandon Marshall
The six catches for 89 yards is about as low a total as I expect to see from Marshall from here on out. He's back.

Eddie Royal
You aren't getting a 93 yard TD every week, obviously, but he'll be their second guy after Marshall and continue developing a rapport with Cutler. He's a very nice fantasy option moving forward.

Tony Scheffler
As long as he can stay healthy enough to stay on the field, he's a definite TE1 in all formats. As much as the Broncos sling it, he'll find the end-zone several more times, and the 92 yards last night won't be uncommon either.

Daniel Graham
That was an aberration, so continue to ignore him.

Ryan Torain
Insert profanity laced tirade. I know I did last night. We've hyped Torain here at Fantasy FanHouse, and it appeared he was arriving as the Broncos every down back. He scored the Broncos first rushing touchdown in five weeks and piled up 68 yards on 12 carries before falling injured.

As it turns out, he tore his ACL and is now out for the season. We'll discuss him again next year. By then I might be sane enough to not flip out.

Selvin Young
He hasn't been trustworthy at all this season, so why would now be any different?

Peyton Hillis
While he only gained 24 yards on eight carries, he ran really hard and gained important yards on second efforts a few times. He's not very talented, relative to his NFL peers, but he'll do the dirty work. For now, I'm guessing he takes the lion's share of carries in the Denver backfield, but he's not good enough to start as anything better than a flex in huge leagues; especially with bye weeks being over.
Big Fantasy Night: Fallout From Broncos/Browns Thursday Night Tilt originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 12:36:00 EST . Of course, he's not healthy at this point, as evidenced by his lackluster at best performance Sunday. Apparently he wasn't as confident as he led everyone to believe leading up to the game.
When the Rams' offense trotted out for their first series of the day Sunday, Jackson was in the huddle. But before the Rams broke the huddle for their first play, Antonio Pittman had replaced Jackson. What happened?

With his strained right thigh muscle not 100 percent, Jackson said he wasn't comfortable running the play once he heard the call.

"The play call was really more of an outside play, a cutback play," (Jim) Haslett said. "He didn't think he was ready for that play. ... It kind of caught everybody off guard."
The entire backfield was in flux for the game, as Antonio Pittman and Travis Minor also suffered injuries. The Rams offense was handcuffed at that point. They had Jackson and Pittman fight through injuries, but they really couldn't advance the ball via the ground as a team.

In order to avoid similar problems this week, Jim Haslett is taking a different approach than last week.
"Steven's got to give us a full day's work this week," Haslett said Monday. "We can't go into the game not knowing whether he can play or not. So we just decided that we're going to make sure that he can actually go in practice, and not just jog through."
The biggest problem for the Rams was that they did have a healthy running back -- Kenneth Darby -- but he didn't dress because they were counting on Jackson.

Fantasy Spin:
Well, on the bright side you'll know if Jackson is playing or not before Sunday. The down side, though, is that it doesn't look good. Jackson's reported sore this week, and last week he said he wasn't. I'm really worried he won't be able to go this week.

Coach Haslett didn't sound optimistic as to the chances of Pittman playing, Travis Minor is also a questionable bet following his concussion.

All that's left, is Mr. Darby. The man who was on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad when the season began.

The Jets have a tough run defense anyway, so I'd definitely avoid nabbing one of the backups. If Jackson plays, though, you have to start him. He's a beast when he plays full-go. I'm crossing my fingers he is this week.
Steven Jackson's Status Completely Unknown originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 13:39:00 EST . Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com is reporting that it is an MCL tear, and Schaub will be out for at least four weeks and perhaps will be put on IR. Coach Gary Kubiak didn't get into any detail in his presser but suggests Schaub will be out 2 to 4 weeks.

Backup Sage <strike>Rosenchappa</strike> Rosenfels will get the start, and he is likely to put up big numbers (and perhaps big interceptions) in Schaub's absence. Kubiak hasn't decided who Rosenfels' backup will be--either practice squader rookie Alex Brink or some guy they work out tomorrow.

The play that got Schaub limping didn't receive a flag, but it looked like it should have. Vikings DE Jared Allen dove directly into Schaub's knee, without being blocked into it. The above video shows a couple of different angles of this.

Teams have learned that the best way to deal with the Texans passing attack is to take physical shots at Schaub when they can find them, like the Titans did to Schaub both of their games last year, or like what the Charger's Drayton Florence did last year.

It's certainly worth the risk of a 15 yard penalty to take out Schaub's knee. Hard to say if Allen gets a fine. Allen's low hits into Schaub haven't got much publicity if you check out the google news searches as of right this moment.

The video is also an illustration of how the Texans' offensive line is not really designed to be a one-dimensional, pass-mostly team. The Texans only ran the ball 16 times, and the smallish line trying to continuously pass block is no match for physical defensive lines, especially in loud road conditions. It also demonstrates the perils to quarterbacks of on-the- job training for rookie left tackles such as Texans Duane Brown. [Correction: The clueless burnt left tackle in question was Ephraim Salaam]

So cheap hit or not? What say you?
Did Jared Allen Cheap Shot Matt Schaub? originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 21:20:00 EST . For instance, he has previously mentioned that he would like to shatter Marshall Faulk's season yardage record (hint: not happening).

And now, he is bypassing the whole "coach in charge" thing and letting everyone know, via his website (SJ39.com) that he plans on playing today.

I want to let you all know that the leg is feeling good enough for me to go on Sunday. This is a big game for us against Arizona, and I'm going to give everything I've got to get us a win.

So to be clear: I am playing. Be ready.

Yes, it does seem a touch aggressive, thanks for asking. But then again, Jim Haslett is "running" this team, so maybe Jackson has more of a say in whether he gets to play than we thought. Or maybe he's just saying this and it means nothing -- it's entirely possible for the coaching staff to laugh him off when he tries to play and sit him on the bench.

And that's made more likely by the fact that Haslett no longer stands to make seven figures if this team cracks six wins; if he thinks he's coaching next year in St. Louis and there's no tremendous financial incentive, then it makes zero sense to force your best player into a potentially dangerous situation.

Fantasy Spin: I'd probably hold off on inserting Jackson into your lineup until you hear a definitive answer from the team or see his name on an official injury report. Not that he's not trustworthy or anything, but this isn't a "set your lineup and walk away" type situation.
S-Jax Is Telling People Via His Website (Read: Blogging) That He Will Play Today originally appeared on Fantasy FanHouse on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 11:20:00 EST .
